Description Portrait of Edward Eastman, first Oshkosh mayor and prominent businessman. Bust view of bearded man wearing a black jacket, white shirt and collar, black bow tie.

11/07/2007, conservator Joan Gorman, MACC: "It appears that the primary image may be photographically based. Not uncommon from the mid-19th century to the present, a canvas or other support is prepared with a thin photosensitive layer onto which an image is exposed and developed. The faint photograph is used as a guide to the application of oil paint. While there is no specific physical evidence of a photograhic image, the portrait does appear to be greatly informed by such a technique."

This painting was donated by the mayor's granddaughter.

Edward Eastman was Oshkosh's first Mayor. Eastman was born in February 1806 in Randolph, VT. and grew up there even attended college. He married an unidentified woman and had one son: George, and then married Catharine Granger June 3, 1841. The couple had three children together. He worked on his father's farm and put two younger brothers through college also. In 1846 he traveled to Dodge County, but that same year would come to Oshkosh where he established a bookstore on Ferry Street. In 1846 he was also appointed Postmaster under Polk's Administration (1846-1849) and again in 1853 under the Pierce administration (1853-1861). In 1850 he was elected to the Assembly in Madison as Winnebago County's representative and in 1853 helped organize the City of Oshkosh's government. That same year he was chosen as Oshkosh's first mayor and also held the office of Alderman. In 1849 he built a frame Greek Revival house on Washington Blvd, which was later torn down and the site became Roe Park. Eastman died in 1870 at the age of 64 years and is buried in Riverside Cemetery.
