Museum Auxiliary

The Oshkosh Public Museum Auxiliary is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization established for the benefit of the museum.

PURPOSE
The goal of the Oshkosh Public Museum Auxiliary is to advance the interests of the museum by helping to expand its collections, provide equipment and broaden the scope of cultural, educational and social activities.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
The Auxiliary has played an important role throughout the history of the museum. Over the years, the Auxiliary has funded the acquisition of historical items, natural history artifacts and fine art. The Auxiliary has worked to fund the renovation of museum archival materials, such as the rebinding of rare books and the restoration of Oshkosh maps. Today, the Auxiliary continues to financially support significant artifact acquisitions, technological advancements and other museum programs. Auxiliary members also make up an important part of the museum’s volunteer base. Members spend time volunteering at the museum, familiarizing themselves with the history of the region and connecting with local residents.

HISTORY
The Auxiliary was founded on November 21, 1924, when curator E. E. Rogers invited local residents to a founding meeting at the Oshkosh Public Museum. Thirty-nine women, representing various study and social clubs attended the meeting to discuss methods to help establish the museum. A subsequent meeting was held on January 9, 1925, during which members voted on bylaws, appointed a nominating committee and named the organization “The Oshkosh Public Museum Auxiliary.” The first Auxiliary president was elected on February 1, 1925. Articles of incorporation were signed in 1926, with an amendment since being adopted in 1985.

MEETINGS
The Auxiliary meets at the museum on the second Friday of the month from October through April. Meetings begin with tea served at 1:30 pm, followed by an informative program. Programs cover a wide range of subjects, from local history to art and antiques to a behind-the-scenes look at museum operations. Everyone is invited to attend Auxiliary meetings as a guest. An annual luncheon meeting is held in May at a local restaurant for all Auxiliary members.
