Gelatin print of a scrap aluminum drive in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, during World War II.
A national aluminum drive was held from July 21-25, 1941. The city of Oshkosh was selected to be the drop of center for all of Winnebago County, all material was collected and dropped off at the corner of Jackson & Church St., the day picked to start collecting was to be on the 24th, so on the 24th at 8:00 am church bells rang and factory whistles blew and the drive was officially started. The aluminum was dropped off from July 25-26 and the scrap trucked in from the surrounding communities was given a police escort. During the day people were entertained by the Eagles band and a community sing-a-along. A total of 14,880 pounds of aluminum was collected in Winnebago Co., it was trucked to Green Bay, from July 29 - August 5, in eight truck loads. The state of Wisconsin totaled 466,339 pounds of scrap aluminum.
The three unidentified boys on top of the pile were boy scouts from Oshkosh who were asked to help unload the trucks.
