Description Hat, Service. World War II U.S. Army wool service hat with plastic-covered brim and thin leather sweat liner that belonged to Alfred G. Last. Wool crown is lined with manmade material (nylon?) and has two air vents on each side. Chin strap of manmade material and affixed to side of cap with brass eagle buttons on each side. U.S. Army enlisted brass eagle medallion on front. Inside of crown has paper label in plastic sleeve with name of owner, Alfred G. Last , and hat size "7."

Alfred George Last was born on May 17, 1917 in Algoma Township, Winnebago County, WI, the son of Alfred Henry Last and Lillian Amanda Thiex Last. Alfred G. Last married Dorthy Valroes Zurn on June 28, 1941 at the 10th Street Methodist Church in Oshkosh, WI. Their daughter Karen Ann Last was born March 30, 1942. He was drafted and reported for service on August 19, 1942. A son Michael Gary Last was born on March 23, 1944. Alfred went through basic training at Camp Grant, IL, advanced training at Camp Phillips, Kansas and was later assigned to Company I, 376th Infantry, 94th Division. On August 6, 1944 the 94th Division left the US for England. They landed at Utah Beach on September 8, 1944. The 94th went into action on September 17, 1944 near St. Nazaire, France and spent 106 days on the front lines. They returned to action as a part of the XX Corps on January 8, 1945. On February 19, 1945 the 376th Infantry Regiment was detached to the 10th Armored Division. The 3rd Battalion was cut off from the rest of the regiment on February 22, 1945 on the east bank of the Saar River. Alfred was wounded in the right back on February 25, 1945. He returned to duty on May 28, 1945 and was assigned to the Headquarters Company, 9th Armored Battalion, 6th Armored Division. He was honorably discharged on September 26, 1945. Alfred had been awarded the Good Conduct Medal; Purple Heart Medal; European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Medal with three bronze battle stars (Northern France, Ardennes, Rheinland); and the Combat Infantry Badge.
