Award of Silver Star medal to 2nd Lieutenant George Dempsey and issued June 29, 1943. George R. Dempsey, First Lieutenant (then Second Lieutenant), Company "I", Thirteenth Armored Regiment, is awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in action on 21 February 1943 in the Kasserine Valley, Tunisia. He personally led his company in an attack against superior enemy forces which had broken through the defenses in the Kasserine Valley. The fearless and aggressive leadership with which he conducted his attack served as an example and inspiration to his men and contributed materially towards stopping the enemy's attack. His tank was hit by an anti-tank shell and set afire. When he was unable to extinguish the fire he ordered his crew to abandon the tank; he was the last to leave. He led the crew back to his own lines, procured another tank and rejoined the company. The courage, leadership and devotion to duty with complete disregard for his own welfare displayed by First Lieutenant Dempsey reflect great credit upon himself and his organization and are deserving of the highest praise. Entered Military Service from 189 East Irving Street, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. By command of Major General Harmon: W. L. Schmidt Major, A. G. D. Adjutant General
