Abstract Letter from Private John E. Schilling, training with the Army Air Force, to Reverend John E. Elbert.

Oct. 3/44
Dear Rev:

Rev. Elbert I don't know how to tell you or explain it but I'll try. Last Friday Evening we were to go on a navigation flight, & our pilot said it was no use of taking us 4 gunners along, so he said we should go to the football game & they'ed see us in the morning. Rev. we never saw them again & never will. They crashed into Mt. Rainer & killed all six of them, Rev. I feel so bad about, I prayed & prayed for God to protect us all, but God knows best, he wanted them. Rev. Elbert, say a prayer for their loved ones. They were the finest fellows I ever knew. I went to church Sunday & said a prayer for the ones who loved them & for God to protect us remaining four of one of the finest Crews the Air Force had. Rev. I'll close now, & keep on praying for us, & I know you will,

Your Friend.
Johnny
