Abstract Letter from Private John E. Schilling, training with the Army Air Force, to Reverend John E. Elbert.

Sept. 10, 1944

Rev. Elbert;

It's about time I'm writing to you again. It's a very beautiful Sunday out today. I couldn't make church this morning, we made a late flight last night & with flying & breathing oxygen it takes all the pep out of you. I'm at the U.S.O. in Walla Walla writing this letter, the people here treat all of us just perfect. It's the finest town I've been in since I've been in the Army.

I'm still flying the B-24 Liberator bombers & have the best crew in the world. They're all fine boys, I'm the youngest. So pray for us Rev. for all of us. And pray that we all soon can get home to our loved ones. Rev. Elbert, I wish sometime when you have a little spare time go & visit mother, she feels sorta lonesome, & she worries a lot about me, I know you can help her. I'd sure appreciate it a whole lot.

I pray every night, & always before a flight so God will guard & protect us. Well Rev. I'll close now, & pray for me & all the other boys,

May God Bless & keep you,
John Schilling
