Letter from Private John E. Schilling, training with the Army Air Force, to Reverend John E. Elbert. Aug. 23/44 Rev. Elbert I got your wonderful letter yesterday. I sure was glad to hear from you. It sure is beautiful up here in Wash. but it's very cool & cold at night. I'll be here for quite a while. We are flying practice bombing missions. I made two night missions since I've been here, 5 hrs. each mission, & it really gets cold up there. This sure is a wonderful Air Field. They have 2 base chapels here; The people in Walla Walla sure are wonderful to us & it really is a beautiful little city, 23,000 pop. I'm praying regularly, & I know God will protect me. Thank Mrs. Negedank for her wonderful letter. I haven't much time to write as I did before, these Liberator bombers that I fly in keep me really busy. Well I'll close now. May God guard & keep you till all of our boys get back home then add 100 years. Your Sincere Friend, John Schilling P.S. That's really quite a nephew I've got. I just can't wait to see him, & I'm his sponsor. I sure wish I could be home for it.
