Letter from Private Donald H. Zobel, 45th Pursuit Squadron, 15th Pursuit Group, United States Army Air Force to Reverend John E. Elbert.

Honolulu, Hawaii
Dear Rev. Elbert,
...Besides carrying out our regular technical duties a large part of our squadron and from every group on the field [Wheeler Field T.H.] is getting training in the use of rifles and machine guns. The purpose of this is so that the Air Corps can protect the field during maneuvers and alerts. In the past this has been the job of the infantry. For the last three days we have been on the range having target practice. This was the first time I ever used a rifle and I done fairly good for the first time. Starting next Monday, May 12th and lasting for two weeks the entire Army on the island is going to have maneuvers. There will be between thirty and forty thousand soldiers taking part in this. Everything will be carried out in wartime fashion including war rations for our meals
About a month ago we had a very sad tragedy in our squadron. Two of our finest officers took off on a night flight in a two-seater plane and failed to come in after the time in the air was up. Our squadron dropped $1700 worth of flares looking for their plane but not a trace of it was found. The authorities decided that their plane went down in the ocean. Hardly a week goes by in which there isn't some sort of an accident on the field….
