||William C. Getchius was born on July 9, 1917 in Mankato, Minnesota, the son of James and Barbara Getchius. His father died in 1922. The family moved to Oshkosh where William graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1935. He enlisted in the US Army on December 15, 1939. He was trained as a mechanic in the United States Army Air Force and sent to the Philippines. He was captured at the fall of Corregidor on May 6, 1942 and help in the prison camp at Cabanatuan. He died on a Japanese transport ship on January 28, 1945.

||Postcard from Staff Sergeant William C. Getchius, United States Army Air Force, to his mother, Barbara Getchius in Oshkosh. Japanese forces in the Philippines captured William in the spring of 1942. His mother did not receive notice of his capture until May 6, 1943. He died of an intestinal disorder on a Japanese transport ship from Luzon, Philippines to Japan on January 28, 1945.
