John Richard Pertmer was born in Tomahawk, WI on May 23, 1919, the son of Martin B. and Caroline M. Pertmer. The family moved to Oshkosh, WI in 1925 where John attended Oshkosh High School. He entered military service in 1940 and was trained in the signal corps. He transferred to the Army Air Force in 1942. He married Catherine Schettl of Oshkosh in the spring of 1943. While on a training flight near Claiborne, TX his plane disappeared and he was reported missing on June 1, 1943. His body was found in the wreckage of the plane by two boys fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. Killed with him was Glen J. Ogden of Chicago, IL.
