Andrew John "Hansie" Leitzke was born in Oshkosh, WI on January 24, 1925 the son of Andrew F. and Dorthea Leitzke. He graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1942 and left for Great Lakes Naval Training Center the following day. He achieved the rank of Fireman 1st Class and was qualified as a gun pointer. He was killed in action while serving on an LST (Landing Ship Tank) near Lae, New Guinea on September 4, 1943 and buried on the island.
