Bust view of Gunner's Mate 3rd Class Harold M. Bailkey. He wears a dark blue Navy jumper and white Navy cap. Copy made by OPM in 1940s of P2005.20.54. Harold M. Bailkey was born in Rice Lake, WI on October 23, 1907. His family moved to Oshkosh in 1916 where Harold graduated from Oshkosh High School. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1929 and returned to Oshkosh in 1935. He worked for American Excelsior Corporation until he reenlisted in the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor. He was assigned to the armed guard on board the SS Oswego, which was torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic Ocean on February 19, 1942. He was officially declared dead in April 1943. |
