Staff Sergeant Rudolph P. Golcomb was born in Oshkosh, WI, the son of Peter and Anna Golcomb. He attended Oshkosh High School and excelled in football. He won a scholarship to Carroll College and graduated with a BA degree in 1933. He played professional football with the Chicago Bears and Philadelphia Eagles. He left the sport when he was able to pay his way to the University of Wisconsin in Madison and graduated with a Bachelor of Law degree in 1939. He quit school to enlist in the army in January 1942. He shipped out to England in September of that year. He was fighting in an infantry unit when he captured in the Tunisian Campaign on February 24, 1943 and officially declared missing in action in North Africa on March 7, 1943.The family was notified in April that he was a prisoner of war in Germany. He became the educational leader at his prison camp in Stalag 3-B, Fuerstenburg, Germany and was later transferred to Stalag 2-B in Pomerania. He frequently acted as an interpreter, being fluent in both German and French. While in this camp he met Carlton Hamann, another Oshkosh native. In January 1945 the camp was emptied to prevent liberation by the Soviet Army and the prisoners were forced to march deeper into Germany, 1100 kilometers to Hannover. He escaped from the camp with eleven other prisoners on April 13, 1945 and made his way to American lines ten days later. He returned to Oshkosh in May 1945 on a sixty-day furlough. In 1946 he was practicing law with Williams-Williams & Meyer in Oshkosh.
