Notes Bust view of 1st Lieutenant John Lautenschlager. He is wearing an enlisted winter service uniform and hat.
John Lautenschlager and his wife Edith were residents of Oshkosh, WI. John entered the service and was trained as a pilot on B-17 "Flying Fortress" bombers. He was assigned to the 8th Air Force in England and flew numerous bombing missions and was awarded the Air Medal. His B-17 was shot down over Germany and he was listed as missing in action on March 6, 1944. He was later reported as a prisoner of war on two radio broadcasts out of Germany. In the 1946 Oshkosh City Directory he is listed as a student at the Oshkosh Teacher's College.
