Candid outdoor view of 1st Lieutenant John H. Person. He is wearing officer's trousers and shirt and has Aviation Cadet insignia on his service hat. John H. Person was the son of Charles H. and Ethel Person of Oshkosh, WI. He graduated from Racine, High School and enlisted in June 1940 in the Army Air Force. He was trained as a bombadier at Camp Scott. He was recalled to duty April 1, 1942 and received further training in Alabama, St. Louis, and Mathers Field, Sacramento, CA where he became a navigator on B-17 Bombers. On June 30, 1942, he flew in a B-17 over Oshkosh and landed in Milwaukee where he met family members. He married Jane Erickson in Sacramento on April 4, 1942. The couple had a daughter, which he never saw. He shipped to England on August 1, 1942 and was assigned to the 353rd Bomb Group. They flew several bombing missions and Person was awarded the Air Medal with two clusters. The unit was transferred to North Africa and his B-17 was shot down ten miles off the coast of Sicily. He was listed as missing in action on April 18, 1943. He was officially listed as presumed dead in May 1944. |
