Outdoor view of a row of Clintonville Four Wheel Drive trucks driving through Oshkosh. The image shows the trucks driving south down Main Street, just north of the intersection with New York Avenue in the 1200 block. There are trolly tracks in the center of the street. Soldiers are in the vehicles. The Four Wheel Drive Auto Company, in Clintonville, Wisconsin, received a contract for trucks from England in 1916 and the US Army in 1917. Sixty of the English trucks were commandeered by the US when America entered World War I. In 1918 a large shipment of trucks were convoyed to Raritan Arsenal in New York. They passed through Oshkosh and spent one night at the Winnebago County Fairground. Total production of trucks during World War I were 3,000 for Great Britain; 82 for Russia, and 14,473 for the United States. |
