Letter from Gunnery Sergeant Arthur Russell, 49th Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, Marine Brigade, 2nd Division to his mother in Oshkosh. Feb. 3rd. 1918 49th Co. U.S.M.C. France Dear Mother I have ben [been] over here for about three weeks and am getting along fine. I am sorry that I have forgot how to talk French, if I could talk as well as I did when I was a kid I could get along a lot better with these people, but I can learn. We are a long way from any fighting yet, and we are only training. We had a fine trip over here on the boat, and was at sea Christmas. I am in fine health so do not worry over me, but take good care of yourself.
