Description Model 1917 Gas Mask in khaki canvas carrier; rectangular canvas carrier with flap and two 'lift-the-dot' fasteners; two compartments inside, one for mask and one for filter container. There is a 4' long cotton string attached to a ring on the side of the bag. Bag has 2" wide shoulder strap with brass buckles. At center of strap is brass latch to quickly shorten the strap. Rubberized canvas face mask with elastic headband and amber plastic lenses held in aluminum frame; cotton-covered rubber tube from mask to filter canister (respirator). Rubber mouth piece inside and steel guard for rubber valve; long oval shaped canister is painted yellow. Inscribed "J.W. Last".

John W. Last worked for the Oshkosh Paper Box Company as a shipping clerk in 1916. He served in Company M, 53rd Infantry, 6th Division during World War I.
