Notes Candid outdoor image of Sergeant John Matschi and an unidentified girl, possibly Mary M. Youngwirt, who he married in 1920. The image shows him sitting on the arm of a rocking chair that the girl is sitting on. He is wearing a Model 1917 uniform with sergeant's chevrons, marksmanship badges, and Mexican Border Campaign Medal. He also wears puttees and holds a campaign hat. Taken when he arrived home in Oshkosh from France.
Johann Thomas Matschi was born in Austria on January 4, 1892, the son of Joseph and Mary (Vlavitsch) Matschi. The family immigrated to the United States in 1894 and settled in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. John enlisted in Company F, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard June 1, 1911. He was promoted to 2nd Corporal on May 31, 1914 and promoted to Sergeant on July 24, 1916. He served in Texas during the Mexican Border War 1916-1917. He was transferred to Company C, 150th Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd Division in August 1917. He attended Officer's Candidate School in France from December 1, 1917 to March 14, 1918. He was promoted to Mess Sergeant on September 25, 1918. He returned to Oshkosh after World War I, married Mary M. Youngwirth and worked for Paine Lumber Company. He died in Oshkosh in September 1972.
