Candid outdoor image by Sergeant John Matschi. The image shows Charles Gillen, Company C, 150th Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd Division, at Camp Mills, New York. Taken prior to their departure for France. Charles Gillen was born July 23, 1897. He enlisted in Company F, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard on March 25, 1916. He served with the company on the Mexican Border from 1916-1917. Company F was Nationalized on July 15, 1917 and became Company C, 150th Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd "Rainbow" Division and saw heavy fighting during World War I. He was promoted to Private 1st Class on August 15, 1917. He was hospitalized with influenza on December 4, 1918 and dropped from the rolls on December 20, 1918. He returned to the company on March 24, 1919 and returned from France with them in April 1919. |
