Group photograph of members of Company B, 150th Machine Gun Battalion returning home to Fond du lac. They are marching down a city street wearing uniforms, medals and 42nd Division patches. Herbert R. Granger is the soldier at second from right, with a pencil line pointing to him. Herbert Ralph Granger was born on August 25, 1895 in Appleton, WI, the son of Herbert W. and Lydia M. Granger. The family moved to Fond du Lac, prior to 1910. Prior to World War I, Ralph served two months as a member of the Ohio Cavalry from Cleveland, OH. He registered for the draft on June 5, 1917 in Fond du Lac and became a member of Company B, 150th Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd Division. Herbert was mustered into federal service on July 16, 1917. They left Camp Mills for France on October 19, 1917 and arrived November 1, 1917. They trained in France until they entered the trenches on March 13, 1918. He was promoted to corporal on November 12, 1918. He left France on April 16, 1919 and landed in Boston April 28, 1919. He was discharged at Camp Grant, IL on May 14, 1919. In 1920 he was working in Duluth, MN as a carpenter in a shipyard and living with his wife Adeline. In 1930 he was living with his family in Oshkosh, WI where he was employed as a mail clerk for the railroad. He died in Oshkosh on April 23, 1960. |
