Candid outdoor view of Sergeant Frank Obersteiner, Company C, 150th Machinegun Battalion. He is wearing a field uniform with campaign hat. Conical tents can be seen in the background. Probably taken at the same time as P1935.13.2. Frank Obersteiner was born March 4, 1894. In 1914 he is listed as a chairmaker for Buckstaff Company in Oshkosh. He enlisted in Company F, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard on March 1, 1914. He saw active service on the Mexican Border in 1916. In World War I, Company F became Company C, 150th Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd Division. He was promoted to sergeant, saw active service in France and was poison gassed on July 15, 1918 near Champaigne, France. He recovered and returned to duty on August 1, 1918. While the non-commissioned officer's were holding a meeting on October 22, 1918, a German artillery shell landed in the group, killing him and wounding several others. He recieved schrapnel to the head and died instantly. He was burried in the field and later reburried in the Meuse-Argonne Cemetery, Romagne-sous-Montfaucon, France. |
