Letter to Henry A. Smith from the War Department confirming the death of Private Henry L. Smith, Company C, 150th Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd Division, while in France. WAR DEPARTMENT, The Adjutant General's Office Washington, January 20, 1919 Mr. Henry Smith 1108 Michigan St., Oshkosh, Wis. Dear Sir: Confirming the telegram of even date from the The Adjutant General, I regret to inform you that it is officially reported that Private Harold Smith, Machine Gun Battalion, died July 29, 1918 from wounds received in action. The cable received in this office further states that the delay in notification was caused by the fact that the first report of the death of Private Harold Smith, was received at the Headquarters of the American Expeditionary Forces in the final report of the First Army Division. Deeply sympathizing with you in your loss. Respectfully, Adjutant General.
