Harold L. Smith was born in Oshkosh, WI on December 18, 1897, the son of Henry A. Smith and Minna Kliss Smith. He elisted in Company F, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard and served on the Mexican Border in 1916. In 1917 Company F became Company C, 150th Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd Division. Harold was killed in action on July 29, 1918 during the Battle of Chateau Thierry by a shrapnel wound to the head. His body was returned to Oshkosh and buried at Riverside Cemetery, Lot 4, Block 110.
