Grave of Corporal Walter Thorne. It is marked by a simple wooden cross with his name, unit, and grave number stenciled on the front. Walter Thorne was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1898. He was the son of Robert and Emma M. Thorne. They moved to Oshkosh prior to 1916. He worked as a laborer. Walter enlisted in Company F, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard; saw service on the Mexican Border; promoted to Corporal; company transferred and became Company C, 150th Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd Division during World War I. He was killed in action from massive schrapnel wounds to both legs on July 30, 1918 during the Ourcq River Battles near Servinges and Maronil, France, Chateau Thierry Campaign. His body was shipped to Forest Park, Illinois for reburrial in 1921. His parents owned a house at 146 Spruce Street. Robert worked at Paine Lumber, but was unemployed for almost a year from 1917-1918. They lost there home in 1918 and retuned to Chicago. |
