Erick Baier was born in Oshkosh, WI on July 31, 1895, the son of George and Mary Froelich Baier. He was working for Paine Lumber Company when he enlisted in Company F, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard on June 2, 1916 and was assigned as bugler. He served in Texas with the company during the Mexican Border War 1916. He reported for duty at Camp Douglas on July 15, 1917 when they became Company C, 150th Machine Gun Battalion, 42nd Division. He served in France and was wounded in action by shrapnel in his left leg on August 2, 1918 near Chateau Thierry.
