U.S. Springfield Model 1903 bolt action rifle, caliber .30-06. Serial Number 829491. Receiver marked: "U.S. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1903" Black walnut stock with finger groves and varnish finish; blued and parkerized finish on milled steel parts. Stock stamped "965" on comb immediately ahead of butt plate. Barrel marked "SA 6-19" with flaming bomb near muzzle. Sights have been modified from original by deepening notch in rear sight and adding a small blob of solder to front sight. Checkered steel butt plate has trap for cleaning rod. Has khaki canvas sling with blackened brass keepers. Upper and lower keepers marked "NU BUCKL/PAT'D 7-21-14". One million rifles were produced at Springfield Armory before the war's end, but not enough to supply all troops. The State of Wisconsin had supplied its National Guard troops with this model, but the US government replaced them with the Model 1917 Rifle when they arrived in France.
