Description 
Model 1917 Steel Helmet: stamped steel one-piece helmet with rounded crown with flared visor around edges; leather chin strap with metal buckle attached to two swivels mounted inside; black oilcloth, leather, and cotton web liner secured to top of crown. Inscribed on chin strap "Capt. Scantleton/128 INF. M.C."; inside sweat band marked "P.M.M.S. CO./1918"; marked on inside crown "TIGHTEN CORD/AND ADJUST/NET TO/FIT THE HEAD" John M. Scantleton served as a surgeon in the Medical Corps of the 128th Infantry, 32nd Division, during World War I. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre Medal by the French Government.
