Full standing view of Major Walter A. Marden. Marden wears the Model 1912 Officer's Tunic; Major insignia on his shoulder tab; "WIS" and infantry crossed rifles with "2" on his collar; and a Campaign Hat with officer's hat cord. He also wears breeches; leather leggings; and garrison shoes. He is standing in front of at tent with wooden walls, a door and small window. The 2nd Wisconsin National Guard arrived at Camp MacArthur for training in August 1917 where they were redesignated the 127th Infantry, 32nd Division. The image is inscribed: "My quarters, office and home. Camp MacArthur, Waco, Texas, Dec. 5, 1917/Some home/9 x 9." Walter A. Marden was the son of Nathan Marden and was born in Chicester, NH circa 1870. He is first listed in the Oshkosh City Directories in 1890 as a concrete contractor in business with his brother Peter L. Marden. He joined the Wisconsin National Guard was Captain of Company B, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard in Spanish American War. He was promoted to Major June 5, 1912, commanding the 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Wisconsin National Guard. He commanded the battalion in 1916 during the Mexican Border War. In 1917 he commanded a battalion of the 127th Infantry, 32nd Division during World War I. His health broke down in France and he was hospitalized in August and September 1918. He was then transferred to the Service of Supply until December 1918 when he was sent back to Fort Dix in the United States to help muster out troops. |
