Description Model 1912 Officer's Garrison Hat: wool crown with wire stiffener in top; officer's mohair band around base of crown; grommet hole in front for officer's eagle insignia; blackened bronze officer's eagle insignia; brown leather visor; brown leather chin strap; two blackened bronze eagle buttons for chin strap; and leather sweatband inside base of crown is inscribed in black ink on the inside "U.G.C.".

Used by Major U. G. Carl in World War I. Ulysses Grant Carl was born on a farm near Picket, Wisconsin in January 1866, the son of Moses and Hannah Carl. Following his father's death in 1868, his mother moved to Oshkosh. He was educated in the Oshkosh schools and worked for Clark Carriage Company and J. L. Clark Manufacturing Company. When the Oshkosh Rifles, Company F, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard, was formed in 1878, he enlisted at the age of twelve as a drummer boy. He was associated with this unit the rest of his life. He rose through the ranks to corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, and in 1898 was catain of Company F. He led the company during the Spanish American War and served in Puerto Rico. In 1916 he was promoted to Regimental Quartermaster and served in the Mexican Border Conflict. He was promoted to major on July 14, 1917 and commanded the 3rd Battalion 3rd Wisconsin national Guard and later was in command of the 3rd Battalion, 128th Infantry, 32nd Division in World War I, and was gassed in France. Following his recovery, he held a post at the Port of Brest, France and mustered out in 1919. He became the Adjutant of the Wisconsin Veterans Home in King, WI (near Waupaca) on April 9, 1923 and served their until his death in 1928. He was engaged to be married to Alma Leupold at the time of his death.
