United States Marine Corps Dress Helmet: black felt body, gilded brass base on top with gilt brass spike; gilt brass eagle globe and anchor devise mounted to front; black hatband around crown; side has two gilt brass chin strap buttons with hooks and USMC eagle clutching anchor (gilt brass chin strap is missing); leather sweatband and hand written in black ink on inside "HARM". George W. Harm was born in Pennsylvania in 1866. His family moved to a farm in Winnebago County about 1869. George served in the United States Marine Corps from October 25, 1899 through October 25, 1904. In the 1900 US Census he is listed as a Private in the Marine Detachment on board the Battleship USS Kearsarge in Boston Harbor. In 1926 he applied for a military penssion. He lived with his sisters in Oshkosh and worked as a sash and door maker in one of the lumber mills. He was a member of the Nelson A. Miles Post No. 1, United Spanish War Veterans. He died in Oshkosh on January 24, 1946. |
