U.S. Magazine Rifle, Model 1898 or Krag-Jorgensen Rifle: Serial Number 302538: full walnut stock with wooden hand guard; steel butt plate with hinged door for cleaning rod in stock; steel trigger and trigger guard; steel bolt action receiver; steel side mounted magazine for .30-40 cartridges; steel barrel with adjustable rear sight with blade front sight; and two steel barrel bands with sling and stacking swivels. The Krag-Jorgensen was invented in Norway: Ole Hermann Johannes Krag and Erik Jorgensen. It was adopted by the US in 1892 and first manufactured in 1894. It replaced the Model 1873 Springfield Rifle. They were manufactured at Springfield Arsenal until 1904. The 2nd Wisconsin National Guard were armed just prior to the Spanish American War with Model 1892 or Model 1896 Rifles and used them in Puerto Rico. This example is similar to those, but with minor improvements. It could have been used by US troops during the Philippine Insurrection.
