Description U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Rifle, caliber .45-70, Serial Number 408611 (manufactured in 1888): walnut full stock; steel butt plate; steel trigger and trigger guard with sling swivel; steel lock plate with hammer; hinged breech block or "Trap Door" for breech loading of cartridges; steel barrel with adjustable Model 1879 "Buckhorn" rear sight with blade front sight; two steel barrel bands, the top with sling and stacking swivels; steel nose cap; and non-original cleaning rod.

When the Oshkosh Guards were formed in 1876 and the Oshkosh Rifles in 1880, these two Wisconsin National Guard companies were issued M1873 .45-70 Rifles, similar to this model. At the time of the Spanish American War in 1898, these had been replaced by the Krag-Jorgensen Rifle.
