Letter to Lorna Hooper from Reverend Edward H. Smith, Chaplain, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard, written while at Guanica, Puerto Rico while onboard the transport ship "Le Grande Duchesse" on regimental letterhead. Headquarters Second Regimant of Infantry Wisconsin National Guard Porto Rico July 27, 1898 My dear Lorna: I have not forgotten your kind gift of a silver nail file, which came to me several weeks ago. I should have written to thank you for it long before now but for the fact that I have been very busy with my regimental duties. It was very good of you to think of one in such a pleasant way, and I will send you a soldier's button, which has been worn on my own blouse, as a small token of my appreciation. I am writing this on board "La Grande Duchesse", the transport that brought us from Charleston, [South Carolina], which is now anchored in the Juamica harbor, at Porto Rico. We are expecting orders to go to San Juan, where it is probable that a fight will take place. You will hear of us through the papers, and I am sure you will be interested in our campaign. With kindest regards to all at home. Very truly, Your friend, Edward H. Smith
