Outdoor view showing Captain Allyn Capron Sr.'s Battery G, 1st United States Battery in action on July 1, 1898 at the Battle of El Caney, Cuba. Two Model 1885, 3.2 inch Field Guns are visible; the artillery crew is working one of the guns; while officers observe the effect of fire. The gun in the foreground appears to be obscured in smoke, but could be the photographer's special effects. Captain Capron may be the officer in the light canvas uniform wearing a sun helmet in the left background. This was part of a series of images taken at the same spot, some in the George Eastman House Collection. Allyn K. Capron served in the United States Army for many years. He commanded an artillery and Gattling Gun Battery at the Battle of Wounded Knee. During the Spanish American War, his battery fired the first shots at the Battle of El Caney, which preceded the Battle of San Juan Hill a few hours later on July 1, 1898. His son, Captain Allyn Capron, Jr. commanded a company of the Rough Riders (1st United States Volunteer Cavalry) and was killed in action there. Capron Sr. returned home to Virginia and died at his home on September 20, 1898 from typhoid fever. [See Spanish-American War information file for detailed account of Capron's Battery at El Caney]. |
