Full standing view of Norman S. Richmond Company B, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard. He is wearing a fatigue coat; campaign hat; leggings; blanket roll; cartridge belt with boyonet; canteen; haversack; and leans on a Krag-Jorgenson rifle. He is posed in front of an ocean scene photographer's backdrop. Tobias Luck of Oshkosh used this backdrop in several other images.
This regiment mobilized on April 28, 1898. The twelve companies came from Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, Appleton, Beaver Dam, Ripon, Ashland, and other local communities. The regiment mustered into Federal service as the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteers, at Camp Harvey in Milwaukee on May 12. The men trained at Camp Thomas, Georgia for two months. In July, they moved by train to Charleston, South Carolina, where they shipped out to Puerto Rico. Landing at Playa De Ponce on July 28, 1898, they participated in combat at Coamo on August 9. They remained in Puerto Rico after the signing of the Peace Protocol for one month. Companies B and F, from Oshkosh, returned on September 9, to a hero's welcome. The 2nd and 3rd Wisconsin were the only two regiments from the state to see actual fighting during the war. There were no battle casualties, but ten men from the regiment died of disease during the conflict. |
