Three-quarter standing view of Captain Walter A. Marden, Company B, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard. He is wearing the P1895 Officer's Forage Cap and Fatigue Blouse; trousers with stripe; gauntlets; and sword. His coat is decorated on the collar with "WIS" and crossed rifles with "2". He wears the Wisconsin State Medal for Spanish American War Service and an a Corps Badge suspended from a ribbon. Inscribed on back: "Your Sincere Friend, Capt. W. A. Marden, Company B, 2nd Wis. Vol. Inf. War with Spain 1898. Mustered into U. S. Service May 12, 1898 at Camp Harvey, Milwaukee County, Wis. In Porto Rico expedition July 20 - to Sept. 1st 1898. Mustered out November 11th 1898 at Oshkosh, Wis." Walter A. Marden was the son of Nathan Marden and was born in Chicester, NH circa 1870. He is first listed in the Oshkosh City Directories in 1890 as a concrete contractor in business with his brother Peter L. Marden. He joined the Wisconsin National Guard was Captain of Company B, 2nd Wisconsin National Guard in Spanish American War. He was promoted to Major June 5, 1912, commanding the 3rd Battalion of the 2nd Wisconsin National Guard. He commanded the battalion in 1916 during the Mexican Border War. In 1917 he commanded a battalion of the 127th Infantry, 32nd Division during World War I. His health broke down in France and he was hospitalized in August and September 1918. He was then transferred to the Service of Supply until December 1918 when he was sent back to Fort Dix in the United States to help muster out troops. |
