He wears an officer's fatigue cap with gold hat cord and embroidered eagle insignia. He also wears a pin on his coat in the shape of a wishbone. He wears a waxed moustache and goatee. Lenz had worked his way up through the ranks in the company.

This regiment mobilized on April 28, 1898. The twelve companies came from Oshkosh, Fond du Lac, Appleton, Beaver Dam, Ripon, Ashland, and other local communities. The regiment mustered into Federal service as the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteers, at Camp Harvey in Milwaukee on May 12. The men trained at Camp Thomas, Georgia for two months. In July, they moved by train to Charleston, South Carolina, where they shipped out to Puerto Rico. Landing at Playa De Ponce on July 28, 1898, they participated in combat at Coamo on August 9. They remained in Puerto Rico after the signing of the Peace Protocol for one month. Companies B and F, from Oshkosh, returned on September 9, to a hero's welcome. The 2nd and 3rd Wisconsin were the only two regiments from the state to see actual fighting during the war. There were no battle casualties, but ten men from the regiment died of disease during the conflict.
