Albumenprint mounted on a white embossed card. 3/4 candid view of Horace M. Witzel wearing an officer's fatigue jacket he also wears a cap. He is standing on the deck of the U. S. S. Iowa. Horace Mark Witzel was born in Oshkosh in 1858, the son of William Henry Witzel and Sophia Dahl Witzel. He was the older brother of Clara Witzel Sterling. He entered the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD in 1873 and graduated in 1877. He served on board the USS Vandalia and other ships. He was a veteran of the Spanish-American War. On Aprill 22, 1884 he married Adele Tennent Adams, the grand-daughter of John Quincy Adams, at Wilmington, Delaware. They had one daughter, Adele Adams Witzel, who died in 1931. He retired in 1905 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He died in Milwaukee in 1927. Inscription: "Lieut: H. M. Witzel/ October 11th, 98." U. S. S. Iowa". |
