U.S. Model 1861 .58 caliber Springfield Rifle Musket: full black walnut stock; steel butt plate; steel lockplate with M 1855 style hammer; steel trigger and trigger guard with sling swivel; round steel barrel with percussion cone, adjustable long range rear sight graduated to 500 yards and blade front sight; three flat steel barrel bands with sling swivel on middle band; three steel barrel band springs; steel nose cap; and steel ramrod in stock. Designed to shoot the .58 minie ball. Dated 1862 on lock plate and barrel. Over 700,000 M1861 Rifle Muskets were manufactured during the Civil War by Springfield Armory and by four private contractors. This rifle musket saw more action than any other firearm during the Civil War.
