Burnside breech-loading carbine, caliber .54, 4th Model patented in 1864, Serial number 28682 with replacement breechlock, Serial Number 33543. First patented by Ambrose E. Burnside March 25, 1856: wooden butt stock with steel butt plate; steel breech mechanism with exterior hammer; steel trigger guard/loading lever; round steel barrel with adjustable rear sight and blade front sight. 55, 567 Burnside Carbines were purchased by the United States government from 1861-1865, making it one of the most popular cavalry weapons used.
