Description 
Model 1862 Joslyn carbine: American black walnut full stock with brass butt plate; brass trigger guard; single brass barrel band; steel lockplate stamped: "JOSLYN FIRE ARMS CO./STONINGTON/CONN"; steel side hammer; steel plate on reverse side of stock with steel slide and carbine sling ring; round steel barrel with adjustable rear sight and blade front sight; hook-like latch at breech which flips open to load a .52 caliber Spencer cartridge; breech stamped: "B. F. JOSLYN'S PATENT/OCTOBER 8, 1861/JUNE 24, 1862" and serial number 1285. Patented by Benjamin F. Joslyn on August 28, 1855. US government contracted for 860 up to July 22, 1862; 11,000 total and 4,000 of which were the Model 1862 made between 1864-1865. Used by Cavalry troops.
