Description Burnside breech-loading carbine, caliber .54, 4th Model patented in 1864, Serial number 17059, and first patented by Ambrose E. Burnside March 25, 1856; wooden butt stock with steel butt plate; inspector's cartouche on reverse side of butt: "R H W"?; steel sling swivel at bottom; steel breech mechanism with exterior hammer; receiver stamped: "BURNSIDES PATENT/MODEL OF 1864/17059"; breech is also stamped with serial number 17059; steel trigger guard/loading lever; steel bar on reverse of receiver with shoulder strap ring; round steel barrel with adjustable rear sight and blade front sight. 55, 567 Burnside Carbines were purchased by the United States government from 1861-1865, making it one of the most popular cavalry weapons used.
