Description 
Manhattan .36 caliber revolver, Series III, manufactured by the Manhattan Fire Arms Company of Newark, NJ, patented December 27, 1859: steel frame; brass backstrap stamped with serial number 40228; brass trigger guard with steel trigger; walnut grip; steel hammer; steel five-chamber engraved cylinder with percussion cones; octagon steel barrel stamped "Manhattan Fire Arms Co. Newark, NJ"; loading lever underneath barrel; and blade front sight. Privately purchased and not a government issue. Revolver used by 1st Lieutenant John E. Tilton, Company G, 30th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. Tilton enlisted from Hancock, Wisconsin on September 9, 1862. He resigned on April 21, 1865 due to a disability. In the 1885 and 1895 Wisconsin Veterans Census he is listed as a resident of Hancock. He is not listed in 1905.
