Compiled by James M. Stimson, Assessor for Princeton Township. The Federal government authorized the draft in early August 1862. On August 8, 1862 the War Department issued orders to the governors of the states to enroll all able bodied men. On September 10, 1862 Governor Salomon called an Extra Session of the Wisconsin Legislature and urged the enrollment of every able-bodied man between the ages of 18 and 45 in the State Militia. This would create a pool of men to draw from when further calls for volunteers to fight in the Civil War would be required. It would also be usefull if the draft had to be enforced. The sheriffs of each county were directed to make up these rosters and appoint deputies to assist. The complete list was to be to the Adjutant General's office. See Quiner, "Military History of Wisconsin", pp. 138-140, for more details. |
