Hiram Wilcox enlisted in Company G, 30th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry on August 21, 1862 from Plainfield, Waushara County, Wisconsin. He transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corp on March 15, 1864. In 1885 he was living in New Lisbon, Wisconsin. In 1895 he was living in Plainfield. His widow Lucy is listed in the 1895-1912 Oshkosh City Directories. The 30th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry was organized in August 1862, but was not filled and mustered in until October 21, 1862. The regiment enforced the draft laws in the state and the companies were scattered to many locations during their early history. On May 26, Companies E and G were sent to Superior to build log stockades and in early December Company G was sent to Davenport, Iowa to guard duty. The regiment was reunited in April 1864 in the Dakota Territory. On September 29, 1864 they recieved orders to proceed to St. louis. On October 29, they were ordered to Paducah, Kentucky. In December they moved to Louisville. They were then sent to Bowling Green, Kentucky on December 13, 1864 to protect the bridge over the Barren River. They were assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Division, Military District of Kentucky. They were sent to Louisville on February 10, 1865. They again were split up and spent the remainder of there service fighting guerrillas and gurading prisoners. They were mustered out in Madison on October 6, 1865. |

One 15 1/2" x 19 1/2" Drawing of the camp of the 30th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry at Bowling Green, Kentucky made by Hiram Wilcox, Company G. The drawing shows rows of small cabins and tents; a platoon drilling in a field; a picket post with guards; a forage wagon coming into camp; and a woods in the background. The regiment was only stationed here between December 13, 1864 and February 10, 1865. |
