DOERNER, William - 1st Lt., Company C, 9th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. William listed his residence as Oshkosh, Winnebago County when he enlisted there on Sept. 5, 1861. He was assigned as above and was promoted to Sergeant in that company. William reenlisted at the end of his term and was then commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in that company on Oct. 19, 1864. He was transferred to Company A, 9th (reorg.) Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of that company on May 23, 1865. William was mustered out on Jan. 30, 1866. |

Friend John
Yours of April 2d came to hand and I was as I always am very glad to hear from you. My health is pretty good, and [I] hope this will find you the same. You always do write short letters, and I don't even think this last one [was] a long one (if Netty hadn't spliced a piece on). If I only had time, I would show you a long letter once. I don't know, as I shall be afraid of you now even if you are 6 feet in your boots. If I get a hold of you once, I'll twitch you out of them boots, so you won't know that you ever was in them. You must be pretty hard on the gals according to your writing, you better be careful how you go in "all over". First thing you know you'll get stuck. I don't think it would pay to come up there to eat sugar. You might put some warm sugar in an envelope and send it down here. What is Joe and them other boys' doing? If you see any of them give them my best res-pects. I owe them a ' letter, and Bill Dichmann also, but I have so little time. Tell Orline that I will write to her as soon as possible. Caroline owes me a letter. She [had] better write if she knows when she is well off. Give my love to Netty, and tell her that I would answer her note. Have you got over the Mumps yet? I guess you and Ben cached it off some of the gals when you got in all over. What do you think of the news? You think the war will soon be over? You [had] better hunt up some gal for me till I come back. I shall want one as quick as I come back. I am having pretty busy times here. I have to go on guard every other day. We have Pro-vost Guard in town, and the troops have all been paid off, so they raise hell in General. Within the last 4 weeks, there were four killed, two shot by our guard that tried to run away from them, and one hung last Friday. Mike Sipe is not here anymore. He is at Memphis. He is well yet. He is [a] sergeant in Company C, lst Iowa Cavalry. I must close. Give my respects to your father and mother, and my love to all the gals.
