BARDEN, Henry Dana - Pvt., Company E, 1st Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry
Henry was born on Jan. 5/10, 1843 at Burlington Township, Chittenden County, Vermont. He was the eldest son of William and Augusta E. (Henley) Barden and a brother of William A. of a following sketch. William was born on Sept. 3, 1816 at New York and died on Feb. 13, 1914. Augusta was born in Jan. 1823 at England and died on May 5, 1876 at age 53 years, 4 months and 17 days. William and Augusta were listed in the 1860 federal census as residing in the third ward of the city of Oshkosh, Winnebago County. Then listed with them were the following children: Henry; William; Emma, born circa 1845 at Vermont; Emmett T., born circa 1852 at New York, resided at Kittitas County, Washington; Charles, born circa 1854 at New York; and Franklin, born circa 1857 at Wisconsin. Henry resided at Oshkosh when he enlisted on Sept. 6, 1861. The credit for his enlistment went to Ripon, Fond du Lac County. During a skirmish at Bloomfield, Missouri on September 11, 1862, he and several other members of his company were taken prisoner, but soon exchanged. On April 24, the regiment was engaged in a severe battle at Whitewater Bridge, outside Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Henry's wound proved to be very serious. When it passed through his body, it punctured his right lung. His father responded to his son's request and made the long trip from Wisconsin, down the Mississippi River, to Cape Girardeau, Missouri. On May 13, 1863, Henry died of his wounds. His father collected the $37.55 pay due Henry, along with his cap, jacket, overcoat, two blankets and some underclothing. He was 20 years, 4 months, 8 days old. Henry is buried with his parents and brother William in the town of Algoma, Winnebago County at Ellenwood Cemetery, Section A. |

Death Certificate (modified from a Discharge Certificate) for Henry Dana Barden, Company E, 1st Wisconsin Volunteer Cavalry, He is described as having been born in Burtlington, Vermont, 19 years; 6' 3/4" tall; light complexion; gray eyes; auburn hair and a carpenter by trade. Death was caused by a wound received at Whitewater Bridge April 24, 1863, died May 13, 1863. |
