Notes Full standing view of James H. Carlisle wearing a dark frock coat with vest and tie. His right arm is bent and his wife is holding it. She is wearing a light colored dress with hoop skirt. James was born circa 1841 at Maine. He listed his residnece as Oshkosh, Winnebago County when he enlistedin Company D, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry on August 20, 1861. He re-enlisted on Jan. 4, 1864 in Company F, 1st Regiment Wisconsin Cavalry. Single and a druggist, he stood 5'7" tall with grey eyes, dark hair and a light complexion. James was taken prisoner on Sept. 11, 1862 at Bloomfield, Missouri. He was paroled and discharged on Nov. 15, 1862. Although the image is inscribed that his wife was "Emily Davis", Winnebago County Marriage records indicate he married Frances Alida Sprague in Oshkosh on January 1, 1863. Returning to his regiment, James was promoted to Sergeant in that company on Nov. 11, 1864 at Louisville, Kentucky. He was detached to recruit men for the U.S. Colored Troops and he was then mustered out on July 19, 1865. It is possible that he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant at the end of the war, but never mustered in at that rank. In 1868 he was working as a carpenter. James was listed as a grocer in Oshkosh from 1869-1870, at 12 Kansas St. (South Main Street). He may have moved to Providence, RI where two images of him were taken. In 1885 veteran census he is listed as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Wisconsin Cavalry, but his name does not appear in the roster. Lived in Fort Howard in 1885, West Greenbay in 1895, and not listed in 1905.
